Principal's Corner

Welcome back for the 2018-2019 school year!  I hope everyone had a fun and safe summer.  I am excited for the new school year.

We have had a lot of changes this summer.  We have been under construction, completing the first phase of a seven million dollar energy savings renovation.  This renovation also includes some safety and security upgrades.  At the high school, we now have a double door entrance.  Visitors during the school day will enter into a new secure room.  In the visitor vestibule, a bullet resistant pass through window will help the high school receptionist safely interact with visitors.  To accommodate the new entrance and vestibule, the high school office was reconfigured and new furniture installed.  The main lobby has a new look, along with updated restrooms.

The energy savings portion of the renovation include new boilers, air units, and lighting.  The cafeteria, lobby, office, and classroom square around the gym and auditorium will now have air conditioning!  Our gym and auditorium has also been updated with new air units and air conditioning.

The second phase of the renovation project will take place next summer.  The remaining classrooms will get new air units and air conditioning.  The restrooms will be updated and the high school will also receive all new windows.

Last year, we changed the master schedule to implement a structured flex period.  This time was used to provide interventions to struggling students.  After reviewing the end of year data, the flex period was very effective.  The number of students who failed courses or were retained was drastically decreased.  Our teachers met with students and reviewed their grades every other Friday.  If students were not doing well, teachers contacted parents and guardians.  Last year, our teachers made over 840 phone calls and emails home!  We will continue with the flex period this year.

We will also continue with our MTSS initiative in grades 6 and 7.  Mr. Grimaldi has been spearheading this initiative.  MTSS has three intervention tiers.  Students are placed on tiers based on their academic needs.  This initative requires a lot of testing and data analysis.  Our teachers have welcomed this challenge and work hard to ensure that every students is successful.

I am excited to start this school year.  We all have a lot of work ahead of us, but I believe we can have a successful school year.    I believe the hard work and dedication among the teachers and students will be reflected in our student performance.  Good luck to everyone this school year.   Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Good luck!
